Our Board comprises the Chairman, our Group Chief Executive, our Group Financial Officer, two Directors and a Non-executive Director.

Bruce Mickel

Group Chairman

A third-generation family member and grandson of the company’s founder, Colonel Andrew Mickel, Bruce Mickel joined the company as a qualified architect in 1970 and has worked across all departments. Bruce believes that innovation within the industry will continue to drive growth. He is keen to promote sustainability in the way we build our homes and to create homes that are more environmentally friendly and cost-efficient.
Away from house-building, Bruce is a Board member of Cre8te, a charitable trust bringing real employment to the Craigmillar area of Edinburgh. Bruce has a keen interest in the arts and participates in a variety of sports, including sailing, skiing and tennis.

Ed Monaghan

Chief Executive

Ed Monaghan is the Group Chief Executive of Mactaggart & Mickel Group Ltd. Ed joined the company as an apprentice at age 16, and his 30 plus years of experience which places him in a uniquely strong position within the construction sector.
Ed is Chair of the Construction Scotland Industry Leaders Group and Chair of Scottish (CITB) Advisory Committee. He is a member of CBI Construction Council. Ed is a founding member of City Legacy, the consortium that delivered the Athletes Village for the 2014 Commonwealth Games and sits on the board of Rosemount, a community-based charity which assists local people into employment and helps asylum seekers gain new skills. He has also been given the honour of becoming a Fellow of the RICS.

Alan Hartley

Group Finance Director

Alan Hartley joined the company as a non-executive director on a part-time basis in 2004, after 34 years at KPMG – 20 of these as a tax partner providing advice to the commercial sector. Alan became Finance Director in 2005 and played a pivotal role in overseeing the company through significant change. He is also Chairman of the Board of Governors at George Watson’s College in Edinburgh, a Non-Executive Director of ESPC and holds a number of non-executive directorships and trustee, pension fund and advisory positions.

Andrew Mickel


A fourth-generation family member, Andrew Mickel joined the company in 2000 and is also a former Chairman and Vice Chairman of Homes for Scotland. Having worked with consultants Caws & Morris in London on commercial, transport and residential projects during the 1990s, Andrew has worked with the CBI Planning Group, the Planning Improvement Service for Scottish Government, and has held a non-executive directorship with an investment trust.
Andrew was a Board member of the Central Scotland Green Network and a community development project in the East End, and is currently a director of a community development project in the East End of Glasgow. A keen triathlete, in 2014 Andrew completed the Iron Man Austria Triathlon.

Keith Swinley

Non Executive Director

Keith Swinley joined the Board as Non-Executive director in January 2010, bringing a legal background and experience from across a number of industry sectors, with particular expertise in corporate governance and risk management. As well as managing a private investment portfolio, Keith is Chairman of the University of Dundee Pension Trustees and a member of the advisory panel to private equity firm Par Equity. He is also a member of the Boards of Governors of Wellington School and the University of Dundee, and Chairman of the Patient’s Advocacy Service.
Outside work, Keith is a keen golfer and enjoys reading and travel, when work and family commitments permit.

Ross Mickel


Ross is a 4th generation family member who first joined Mactaggart & Mickel’s Homes division in January 2006. Ross was appointed Commercial Manager of Mactaggart & Mickel Timber Systems in 2007, progressing to General Manager in May 2010. In his role with Timber Systems, Ross has overseen the development and implementation of our innovative closed panel system, bathroom pods, and latest web joist product, in addition to working with outside partners on a variety of projects to construct traditional homes, hotel and restaurant units, and the 225 unit Commonwealth Games Athletes Village. Ross joined the Group Board in February 2012, and continues to drive modern methods of construction through off-site manufacture from design to delivery.

Joanne Casey

Homes Director

Joanne has led the Homes’ sales team since joining the company in 2008 and is instrumental in the creation of new sales initiatives and marketing. A member of the Institute of Directors, she is Chair of Homes for Scotland’s Customer Relations Task Group, and Chair of the Foundation Board of Business Beats Cancer (Glasgow) for Cancer Research UK.

Marion Forbes

Homes Director

Marion joined Mactaggart & Mickel Homes in 2006 and is Director of HR and Health & Safety. Marion has been instrumental in our Homes division gaining Gold Investors In People and Investors in Young People accreditation and recently received a Regional Emerging Director award from the Institute of Directors. Marion sits on the board of The Rock Trust Charity which works to prevent youth homelessness and support young people to have better futures. Marion is also a voluntary youth group leader.

Peter Shepherd

Homes Director

Peter has over 25 years’ experience in the industry. Within the Homes business Peter leads the construction and procurement teams and is also responsible for the development and management of strategic plans for the company. In addition he heads our Contracts business

Paul McAninch

Homes Finance Director

Paul became Homes Finance Director in May 2011 and was appointed Acting Group Finance Director in May 2015. Paul leads the financial strategy of the diverse businesses of the Group along with leading the ICT strategy. Paul represents the Group’s joint venture interests in various LLPs and is a Trustee of the Group’s pension scheme. Paul is the current Chairman of the Scottish Finance Directors Group.
