Mount Hindrance, Chard

Mactaggart & Mickel secured an interest in a 79-acre greenfield site in the market town of Chard in South Somerset in 2011.

We submitted an outline planning application to South Somerset District Council in November 2012 for 350 new homes, a new facility for Chard Football Club and associated open space. Further to the Council refusing our planning application in August 2013, we lodged an appeal, which was dismissed on the grounds that the proposals would prejudice the plans for extension for East Chard, which has been a long-term Local Plan aspiration. The Inspector did however positively comment on the sustainability benefits of our site, and recognised there were no technical constraints.

Mactaggart & Mickel are currently reviewing strategic options for this site as the Council still no longer have a 5-year housing land supply.

Working in partnership with the Football Club during 2017, we have revised the masterplan which involves relocating the new stadium and training pitch to the heart of the development. Responding to previous objections relating to traffic impacts, the scheme has been amended and now includes a single principal access point and consequently a housing development of 295 dwellings. Technical work was updated in 2017 to enable Mactaggart & Mickel to resubmit a planning application for the site.
