Community garden set to blossom thanks to Mactaggart & Mickel Homes

Lucky Springburn community garden group, the Molly Weir Gardening Project, has received a welcome donation of £1,000 from family housebuilder Mactaggart & Mickel Homes’ Building Communities Fund.

The funding will allow the group, which is made up of volunteers from the local community, to purchase a new garden shed for its community space. The remainder of the donation will fund the building of raised beds for planting vegetables ahead of the new growing season. The group is part of the Willowacre Trust and West of Scotland Housing Association and aims to provide access to green space for locals who do not have their own.

Mactaggart & Mickel Homes has a happy history of supporting good causes. The Building Communities Fund was created as part of the company’s ongoing efforts to help organisations and projects which enhance the lives of people within their local communities.

The fund is open throughout the year to applications from charities, community groups, sports teams and schools within a five mile radius of any live Mactaggart & Mickel Homes development like Douglas Gardens, Milngavie.

Paul McAninch from Mactaggart & Mickel commented: “The Willowacre Trust does fantastic work in Springburn through the Molly Weir project and we are pleased to be able to lend our support. This thriving community garden not only allows local residents access to green space but ensures they don’t have to miss out on all the pleasure gardening can provide.

“We always strive to work closely with communities and make a positive contribution, and our Building Communities Fund allows us to offer assistance in small ways which nevertheless make a real difference.”

Mactaggart & Mickel Homes contracts manager, Jamie McLean, visited the garden on behalf of the company to see for himself the work that has been carried out. Commenting on the support received, Maisie O’Brien, Community and Support Services Manager from The Willowacre Trust, said: “We are so grateful to Mactaggart & Mickel Homes for awarding this funding to our Molly Weir gardening project. It will enable us to create a positive community space and host events, encouraging local families and residents who do not have access to green space to participate and learn how to grow their own vegetables.”
