New homes for disabled veterans in Edinburgh

Work has been completed on a significant new project in Muirhouse, Edinburgh providing vital housing for disabled veterans.

The project, which has been delivered by Mactaggart & Mickel Contracts, has seen a total of five bespoke residential units provided for The Scottish Veterans’ Garden City Association (SVGCA) at Salvesen Gardens.

The terraced bungalows and semi-detached homes will provide essential affordable housing for disabled veterans in Scotland. Constructed from closed panel timber frame - supplied and erected by Mactaggart & Mickel Timber Systems - the homes are of high quality and show excellent energy efficiency performance.

Peter Shepherd, director at Mactaggart & Mickel Contracts, said: “Our extensive construction experience and commitment to effective design allows us to offer value for money without compromising on the quality of the build; priorities which are vital for a project of this nature.

“I have no doubt that these homes will make a big difference to the lives of their residents, helping them retain their independence and freedom. It really is an honour to be a part of this project, helping some of our country’s heroes.”

Lieutenant Colonel Richard Callander, chairman of SVGCA, said: “This development with Mactaggart & Mickel is one of great architectural merit.  It is a classic example of a community within a community, and illustrates perfectly our tried and tested model of housing for disabled veterans that we have been perfecting for over a hundred years.”

The Salvesen Gardens project is the third that Mactaggart & Mickel Contracts has delivered for SVGCA, having previously handed over ten homes at two developments in Motherwell and Wishaw.

SVGCA is committed to providing reasonably priced rental housing for disabled veterans. It currently has over 642 homes in 74 locations across Scotland, housing those who have served in the British Armed Forces, Merchant Navy, Police or Fire Brigade and have been partially or totally disabled.
