Stepping Up for Youth Homelessness: Our Centenary Firewalk

As part of our centenary celebrations, a team from Mactaggart & Mickel took on a bold challenge: stepping onto a two-metre bed of hot embers to raise funds for Rock Trust, a charity dedicated to ending youth homelessness in Scotland.

Before the walk, our team took part in some unusual preparation. Led by Lee Walls, Certified Firewalk Instructor and founder of Firewalk Scotland, we learned techniques to build focus, courage, and confidence. The preparation even included breaking arrows against our necks—demonstrating that limits are often more mental than physical. By the time we reached the embers, initial nerves had turned into a sense of achievement, and completing the walk felt genuinely rewarding.

Our team was kitted out in custom centenary hoodies produced by Slanj, featuring our digital centenary tartan printed at CAT in Glasgow. Designed by GSA competition winner Claire Fowler, the tartan added a unique touch to the event — and the hoodies now serve as a memorable keepsake for everyone who took part.

The evening was full of teamwork, laughter, and determination. We’d like to thank Rock Trust for keeping us fuelled with hot chocolate and biscuits before the walk—and pizza afterwards, which was very welcome!

Thanks to the bravery of our team and the generosity of our sponsors, colleagues, and partners, we are proud to share that we raised £5,000 for Rock Trust. These funds will support housing, education, and vital services for young people across Scotland, helping turn our centenary celebrations into meaningful impact.

Brian Dick, Managing Director at Mactaggart & Mickel commented: "Taking part in the firewalk was a memorable experience. I’m incredibly proud of the team for taking on this challenge. Their determination and spirit not only made the firewalk a success but, together with the generosity of our supporters, will make a real difference for the young people supported by Rock Trust."
