Mactaggart & Mickel Marks £20,000 Raised for Maggie’s with Cheque Presentation at Edinburgh’s Western General

Mactaggart & Mickel is proud to announce that it has raised £20,000 for Maggie’s following a series of fundraising activities held in support of the charity, one of the Group’s Centenary Charity Partners.

The fundraising total was marked with a cheque presentation at Maggie’s at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh, attended by Ross Mickel, Director at Mactaggart & Mickel, alongside his wife and their three children. The family met with the centre’s Fundraising Manager, Samantha Lea, and Co-Centre Head, Caroline McKinnel, to formally present the donation.

The visit held particular significance for the Mickel family. Maggie’s Western General Centre has a long-standing personal connection, having supported Ross’s mother, Dot Mickel, during her cancer journey. In Dot’s memory, the family’s Charitable Trust, The Mickel Fund, funded the creation of “Dot’s Den”, a garden and consultation space within the grounds of the centre. Designed as a peaceful haven, Dot’s Den offers a welcoming space for those receiving one-to-one support, as well as for family members and loved ones.

The £20,000 total was raised through a series of team-led fundraising initiatives. The campaign began with Miles for Maggie’s, a human-powered virtual challenge that saw colleagues and supporters travel between ten Maggie’s centres across the UK, from Inverness to London’s Royal Free Centre. Participants walked, ran, and cycled to raise funds for people living with cancer and their families. Ross Mickel and his family also took part, contributing to the fundraising total and supporting a cause close to their hearts.

Next came the Jail or Bail Challenge, a light-hearted fundraising event held at Mactaggart & Mickel HQ. Ross Mickel was “arrested” for the charge of murder on the dancefloor and held in custody for six hours while colleagues, partners, and supporters donated to secure his release. The challenge exceeded its original fundraising target and unlocked a series of fun milestones, including a temporary prison-style tattoo, a karaoke performance, and a sponge showdown, all boosting donations and engagement.

Thanks to their generosity, alongside donations from the Mickel Fund and the Mac Mic Foundation, the fundraising effort reached its £20,000 target.

Ross Mickel, Director at Mactaggart & Mickel, said: “The support Maggie’s provides is second to none, and seeing the team come together to raise £20,000 has been incredibly special. I’m hugely grateful to everyone who took part and helped support a charity that does so much for people and families affected by cancer. This cause is especially close to my heart, as it continues the legacy of my mum, Dot, whose memory inspired our family’s support for Maggie’s.”

Caroline McKinnel, Co-Centre Head at Maggie’s Western General Centre, added: “We are extremely grateful to have received such a generous donation from Mactaggart & Mickel as one of their Centenary Charity Partners. It has been fantastic to have their support, and indeed the fundraising efforts of all Mactaggart & Mickel employees, which will enable us to support more people with cancer and their families over the coming year.

“Maggie’s relies entirely on voluntary donations from individuals and the local community to enable our professional team to provide specialist cancer support, psychological support and benefits advice for everyone who needs it. We can’t thank everyone at the Mactaggart & Mickel, the Mickel Fund and the Mac Mic Foundation enough.”

The Centenary Charity Partners programme is now in its final chapter, with Mactaggart & Mickel set to officially conclude its centenary celebrations on 28 February 2026.
