New ‘Japandi’ show home unveiled at Longthorn Gardens at Shawfair, Midlothian

Mactaggart & Mickel, alongside joint venture partner Cruden Homes, has unveiled a striking new four-bedroom Leven show home at Longthorn Gardens, the highly anticipated residential development in the heart of Shawfair — one of Scotland’s best-connected new towns.

Now open to visitors, the new show home offers a glimpse into the high-quality design, thoughtful layouts and contemporary living that define Longthorn Gardens.

Designed by Eileen Kesson of Envision, the Leven show home combines a strong specification with a sense of understated luxury, centred around a layout ideally suited to modern family life.

The bright and spacious lounge provides a welcoming space to relax or entertain, while the open-plan kitchen and dining area, complete with French doors, floods the home with natural light. A utility room and WC are conveniently located just off the kitchen, enhancing day-to-day practicality. Upstairs, four generously sized bedrooms offer ample storage, with the principal bedroom benefiting from a private en-suite.

The interior design draws inspiration from the popular Japandi style — a blend of Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian warmth — using a natural, organic palette of pale oak and light linen finishes, complemented by subtle black accents and layered textures. Playful details such as children’s murals, oversized Marimekko daisy prints, and sustainable fabrics made from bamboo and recycled fibres add personality while maintaining a calm, cohesive feel throughout.

Eileen Kesson, Director at Envision, said: “We wanted to create a home that reflects the lifestyle of the diverse mix of families moving to Shawfair. With modern family living in mind, the show home blends light, crisp interiors with a warm stone base and carefully chosen accents to create a contemporary yet relaxed environment. Every detail has been considered to balance style, comfort and practicality.”

Longthorn Gardens will deliver 116 high-quality homes and apartments, ranging from two-bedroom apartments to five-bedroom family homes, with sizes from 731 sq ft to 1,700 sq ft. Prices start from £232,500, with the first homes expected to be ready in early 2026.

Jenny Harvie-Miller, Head of Group Communications & Engagement at Mactaggart & Mickel, said: “Shawfair offers the best of both worlds, combining easy access to the city with the calm and space of village life. At Longthorn Gardens, a diverse collection of high-quality homes has been carefully designed to suit buyers at every stage of life, all within easy reach of everyday amenities. Our new show home offers a glimpse into what life here could be like — showcasing homes created for modern living within a community designed to grow with its residents.”

Hazel Davies, Sales and Marketing Director at Cruden Homes, added: “The new show home is truly striking, and we know prospective buyers will be wowed by the interior styling, specification and impressive ceiling heights. Homes at Shawfair are already in high demand, so we’d encourage anyone interested to book a viewing soon.”

Sustainability is central to the development, with homes benefiting from the Vattenfall district heating system, energy-efficient specifications and high-quality materials — supporting a cost-conscious and environmentally responsible lifestyle.

Offering advice to homeowners looking to replicate show home style in their own spaces, Eileen Kesson added: “Take time to gather inspiration, create a moodboard and explore different palettes and textures before committing. Stepping back to consider the home as a whole helps create flow and harmony — something that makes a real difference to how a space feels day to day.”
