Mactaggart & Mickel site manager praised after winning top Scottish award

Family housebuilder Mactaggart & Mickel have hailed long-serving Ayrshire-based site manager, Stuart Gillespie, as a “model of consistency” after he scooped a prestigious industry award.
Stuart, the Senior Site Manager at Mactaggart & Mickel’s Greenan Views development in Doonfoot, Ayrshire, was honoured at the National House Building Council Pride in the Job Regional Awards.

He was named Regional Winner for the Medium Builder category, which means he now has 11 NHBC Scottish regional awards to his credit thanks to a meticulous attention to detail at the Mactaggart & Mickel site.

Regarded as one of the building industry’s top personal honours, it recognises Stuart’s role in overcoming the challenges created by Covid-19, by leading a team of company colleagues and sub-contractors whose dedication contributed to this award.

“It is a real honour to have won this award which acknowledges the determination of the Mactaggart & Mickel team to achieve the very highest standards at Greenan Views,” said Stuart, who joined the Glasgow-based company 30 years ago.

“Every day on site, I see a real focus on delivering quality homes for our customers in everything we do - something this award illustrates – and I am proud to be part of a brilliant team who constantly strive for excellence.

“Just like people across whole of the UK, we’ve faced unprecedented challenges due to the coronavirus pandemic, but I’m proud of the way my team have not let anything get in their way of delivering excellent homes.”

Stuart, who lives in Wishaw, began his career at Mactaggart & Mickel as an apprentice joiner, working his way up to become a senior site manager for the company.

His latest award means he is in the running to win the overall ‘UK supreme’ award in the Medium Builder category, adding to his 11 Scottish awards. Now in its 40th year, Pride in the Job celebrates the exceptional contribution site managers make in creating homes of outstanding quality. As well as undergoing spot checks on the day-to day running of the sites, each site manager is assessed across 37 areas, including their technical knowledge, consistency in the build process and quality controls.

Peter Shepherd, Director at Mactaggart & Mickel, said:  “Stuart is a real credit to Mactaggart & Mickel and to win 11 regional NHBC awards proves what a model of consistency he is.

“Stuart leads by example and typifies the attention to every detail that is at the very heart of Mactaggart & Mickel’s approach and has been for generations - it’s rewarding to see this recognised by the housebuilding industry.”

Organised by NHBC, the UK’s leading warranty and insurance provider for new homes, the awards recognise and reward a site manager’s dedication to achieving the highest standards in housebuilding, and their commitment to building homes of outstanding quality.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a series of online events are taking place throughout October and November, providing the opportunity to celebrate the Quality Award winners and announce the Seal of Excellence and Regional winners in Pride in the Job’s 40th anniversary year.

NHBC Regional Director Paul Edwards said: “Despite the challenges the industry has faced due to the pandemic, the very best site managers have kept their focus on delivering high-quality new homes for their customers.

“A site manager’s role can be one of the most challenging in the industry and their constant drive for excellence is at the heart of the competition. A Seal of Excellence Award is a great achievement for any site manager and a Regional Award even more so, as it places them at the top of their profession.
It’s no surprise Pride in the Job-winning sites have higher levels of customer satisfaction as these homes are among the best the UK has to offer.”

Stuart will now go on to compete for the NHBC Pride in the Job Supreme Awards early next year. For more information about Green Views, click here.
